Tumble Club Report for 2009/10 Season
What an excellent season 2009/10 was for the Tumble club! Congratulations to everyone who took part – you raised £315 for the Air Ambulance – well done to one and all.So let’s go through the season and arrive at the naming of the Tumble Club Champion. I suppose I should start with the “pre-season”. I had been second or third in the reckoning for the previous two seasons, but successfully ruled myself out with an injury on October 30th which stopped me hunting for the whole season – not sure that it was worth it, but at least there was no way I could get the champions cup! In the past two years Frank (my husband, for those not in the know) had also been a contender and so he was carrying the flag for the Herrick household. The season started with the opening meet and an excellent start of seven fallers. Sadly Alivia Paver also ruled herself out of the rest of the season with a significant injury, whilst mounting her horse at the opening meet. However the season had not been underway for long before Frank stepped up to the plate, with two falls at the November 14th meet – actually they weren’t really falls – he was on a new horse, just over from Ireland the previous week, and so how was he to know it didn’t like silver platters of sausage rolls approaching its head. One huge buck and he was off; he got back on and no sooner had his bum touched the saddle and an even huger buck landed him with concussion and a day at Leicester Royal Infirmary. But a good total of two!The season continued, but the main contenders (from previous years) seemed to fall away. John Bodycote (the defending champion) managed to be ill for a lot of it, and although he did manage to fall off the quad once, he wasn’t out enough to be a serious challenger. And as for Lydia Simmons– she managed to go from champion, to runner–up, to absolutely no falls at all. I don’t know how she did that, but sadly we got no money out of her this season.Frank, however continued to progress. He had one slip on a shiny tarmac road, which had him and the horse down, and then there was another time where his horse got stuck in a ditch – he had to dismount to lead the horse out, but it still counts, I’m afraid. There was one more, when he was well and truly jumped out of the saddle over a big hedge, dislocating his finger in the process. So we had to look at the newcomers – and there was some sport there. Huw Williams came off head first in a ditch at opening meet, and then Carly, his groom, came off the same day. That looked promising but as the season progressed his show jumping skill came to the fore and he couldn’t challenge. And then there was Vanda Brooks – a valiant effort from her. Vanda rides a game horse, which goes for it, whether Vanda is ready or not, and is not averse to getting rid of excess energy with a big buck. As the end of the season neared, Vanda was on four and Frank was on five. At the last meet Vanda equalled the reckoning coming off when her horse bunny hopped over a jump and Vanda broke a few ribs. Five all, or so we thought. Until Frank, whilst on his own on point (no-one else saw this – it is his honesty which sank him) came off over a set of rails, landing on his feet – but there it was – a six!And so the 2009/10 champion is Frank Herrick. I’m sure you would all agree that he is very deserving – especially as he was the main collector for the Tumble Club, and it is through his efforts and your good will in joining in the fun that we have managed to raise such a good amount.
